If you really want to see if it's hardware, you could try booting from a Linux disc like Ubuntu or Mint. Any other ideas besides trying a ps2 keyboard? He has also had viruses on his laptop a couple of times. The mouse started having this same problem after I updated to 12- but I figured that was fine because Ubuntu was too heavy for my little laptop. was the mouse un-attached or still plugged in while using the touchpad?
